The threat is real and immediate. We need to act. It may be too late. Very little time is left and there is very little margin for maneuver. It is not time to be speculating about the potential effectiveness of what we need to do. We need to do it.

Acteal, Teil der Gemeinde Chenalho, war am 22.Dezember 1997 Schauplatz eines Massakers an 15 Kindern, 21 Frauen, vier von ihnen schwanger zwischen der 10. Woche und dem 5. Monat, sowie 9 Männern der indigenen Volksgruppe der Tzotziles . Weitere 25 Bewohner wurden leicht bis schwer verletzt. Die 45 Opfer des Massakers waren Mitglieder der "Abejas” (Bienen). Das Massaker geschah, ohne dass die Policia de Seguridad Publica (Polizei der öffentlichen Sicherheit), deren Kasernen kaum 200 Meter entfernt lagen, eingriff.

Over 1000 people from 40 different countries and about 2000 people from the Tzotzil region met in Oventic for a preparation meeting from 30th December 2006 to January 2nd 2007 for the next Intercontinental Encuentro.
