And necessary! This is the theme for the World Social Forum that I (and tens of thousands of people from all over the world) am attending in Caracas this week. I know the idea of a world where everyone lives in peace and with justice is very "subversive" but the theme is very close to my heart and soul.
We need a new world. This one is broken.

The WTO Summit in Hong Kong (
http://www.citizen.org/trade/wto/Qatar/hongkong/ ) remains in a deadlock - why? Because the decade-plus test run of the WTO's corporate globalization regime has actually increased poverty, both internationally and in the United States. Given all of the WTO's other failings, it's a powerful indictment that it has not only failed to deliver on its economic promises, but has actually made matters worse!

DEK: From Houston to Selma, community organizations have stepped in where FEMA and Red Cross have failed, especially for people of color. But as corporations get rich, real estate developers circle, and residents resettle far from home, they are shifting from relief to demanding the right of return.

The September 12 Detroit Free Press carried an article praising Cuba's "Disaster Plans." I hope this means that, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, more Americans are ready to recognize that we have much to learn from anti-capitalist societies.

Mike Davis on Katrina's aftermath:
The struggle over the future of New Orleans
September 23, 2005
THE POOR of New Orleans-- especially poor African Americans-- suffered the brunt of Hurricane Katrina's devastation in the city, thanks to the criminal neglect of authorities at every level of government. Now, the wealthy elite wants to rebuild on its terms-- and prevent large numbers of
Katrina's victims from ever returning. But the politicians and business interests will face a fight-- in a city with a rich tradition of resistance.
An Interview with MIKE DAVIS on the political impact of Hurricane Katrina.

Two days after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the Walgreen's store at the corner of Royal and Iberville streets remained locked. The dairy display case was clearly visible through the widows. It was now 48 hours without electricity, running water, plumbing. The milk, yogurt, and cheeses were beginning to spoil in the 90-degree heat. The owners and managers had locked up the food, water, pampers, and prescriptions and fled the City. Outside Walgreen's windows, residents and tourists grew increasingly thirsty and hungry.
