Global Action Day against WEF and war

On January 26, 2008, activists protested in Berne, Zurich (Jan. 25) and Davos against the World Economic Forum (WEF). At the same time, groups and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) organised actions on all five continents for another world as a decentralised World Social Forum (WSF) action day.

I had never been to Africa, and kept asking myself if it made sense to fly to Nairobi for the World Social Forum (WSF, in January 2007). Luckily I finally decided to go, and got two trips in one. The first was to the world of the WSF, which I already knew to some extent. The second was – thanks to new friends I met there – a brief encounter with the reality of Kenya.

Eindruecke vom WSF 2007 in Nairobi

Mehr als 60000 TeilnehmerInnen registrierten sich beim Weltsozialforum (WSF) in Nairobi, Kenia. Zum siebten Mal fand das WSF parallel zum Weltwirtschaftsforum in Davos (WEF) statt. Harsche Kritik aufgrund von Ausgrenzung begleitete das WSF, sogar die Abschlußerklärung der Versammlung sozialer Bewegung ging auf zu hohe Preise für Teilnahmegebühren und Essen ein. Selbst das Trinkwasser wurde in Plastikflaschen zum vierfach erhöhten Preis verkauft.
