impressions from the WSF in Nairobi 2007

-, 01.02.2007 19:48

More than 60000 participants were registered at the World Social Forum (WSF) in Nairobi, Kenya. This was the seventh edition of the WSF in parallel to the World Economic Forum in Davos (WEF). There was harsh criticism about exclusion during the WSF, and the Final Call of the Assembly of Social Movements mentioned too high prices for participants' fees and food. Even drinking water was sold at a price that was four times higher than usual.

Networked Politics

Transnational Institute, 16.01.2007 15:28

Networked Politics is the product of a collaborative research process for rethinking political organisation in an age of movements and networks. It examines the role of social movements, progressive parties, political institutions and new ‘techno-political tools’ in achieving transformative change.

The Bamako Appeal: A Post-Modern Janus?

Peter Waterman, 05.07.2006 16:21

Abstract: The Bamako Appeal is an attempt to move the World Social Forum process from being some kind of agora for discussion of alternatives to neo-liberal globalisation, to providing an anti-capitalist leadership for the global justice and solidarity movement. Sponsored by prominent left activist intellectuals of the 'Thirdworldist' tradition, it has nonetheless adopted much of the language of the new movement. Because of its authors' apparent vanguardism, the BA has proven controversial within and around the leadership of the WSF. Such charters, declarations and manifestos are, however, common within the wider movement, occur within the WSF itself and should be welcomed. But the process by which the BA has appeared and been launched reproduces old movement practices that the new movement has been surpassing. The BA's chapter on labour suggests the possibility and necessity for a meaningfully global and open dialogue on the BA more generally. Whilst the BA is commonly seen as a deviation from or opposition to the WSF process, both of these instances reveal the simultaneous backward-looking and forward-looking nature of emancipatory movements.

Michael Albert: WSF: Wie weiter?

source: rls, Dietz Verlag, 10.06.2005 15:29

Hilary Wainwright: WSF on Trial

source: rls, 29.05.2005 17:27

With 155, 000 participants from 135 different countries, the fifth World Social Forum held in a specially constructed site in Porto Alegre’s Marinho Park was bigger than ever, and with a wider geographic spread. Yet the future of the WSF was on trial. Was it becoming its caricature: a kind of political Woodstock, Hugo Chavez pulling the crowds instead of Mick Jagger?

Intellectuals and activists in Brazil launch the second phase of the Post-neoliberal Agenda discussions - one of the plural debating spaces that originated in the WSF. The aim is the formulation of theories for a new society.

ESF: Making Another World Possible?

Les Levidow, 09.10.2004 00:14

The European Social Forum has been inspired by the global slogan, 'Another world is possible', expressing the need to create alternatives from out of the resistance to neoliberalism. Since its inception in 2002, the ESF has provided an opportunity to debate methods and strategies for turning that slogan into reality. Nevertheless the organisational process itself has become a site of conflicting political philosophies about progressive social change.
