WTO coming to Sydney, Australia

by melbourne imc - 17.09.2002 08:09

The WTO is set to meet in Sydney on November 14-15 for an informal meeting of trade ministers.

Created in 1995 to enforce and expand GATT (the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade), the World Trade Organisation is the most powerful legislative and judicial body in the world. By promoting the agenda of multinational corporations above the interests of local communities, working people, and the environment, the WTO has drawn wide opposition from across the planet.

One key focus of opposition is the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) which would open the flood-gates to privatise public services such as health, welfare, education and much more.

News of the meeting spread rapidly with opposition groups quick to begin preparations against the WTO's corporate knees up. Plans and strategies are afoot from a wide range of groups to mobilise against the meeting.
