Protests and Repression in Kenya

by source: A and S - 15.07.2004 17:20

A new resource web page which focuses on a current wave of political organizing and state repression taking place in Kenya right now.

In recent weeks there have been pitched street battles between police and protestors fighting for a new constitution, numerous ghetto uprisings and police shootings of unarmed protestors, whilst the unpopular government of President Kibaki is coming under attack from every direction.

In this context we believe that it is crucial that international
solidarity activists become aware of these struggles and be prepared to offer their support and solidarity to activists in Kenya in case of
further state repression and targeting of movement activists. The
following resource page with video, audio, text, and photographic
materials has been developed by members of the A&S web crew to highlight these and other political struggles currently taking place in Kenya.

In particular we would like to draw your attention to three specific
postings:

We have links to an online video called "Peoples' Power: The Struggle
for a New Kenyan Constitution" which contains 10 minutes of video
footage shot during the July 3rd constitutional protest. It is a
presentation of the group First Woman, and can be viewed at

We also have a collection of 19 dramatic video stills taken by an A and S member who filmed the July 3rd protests in Nairobi. They are organized into three sections for easier viewing:

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to a photo essay containing graphic images of a police attack on an unarmed funeral procession protesting the murder of Nimrod Sianji Okwayo who was tortured to death by police in Butere, Kenya. These photos were taken by Mbugua Kaba on June 26th, 2004 and are available for viewing at

We also have audio and background articles available at our main resource page on Kenyan struggles at  http://auto_sol.tao.ca/node/view/729
that will give you a better sense of the context to these recent struggles.

More information about struggles in Kenya and other parts of the world will continue to be added to the A and S site on a daily basis.
