Land occupation in Bangladesh
by BKF - 02.12.2004 15:18
On 22 November 2004, early in the morning, under the leadership of Bangladesh Krishok Federation and Bangladesh Kishani Sabha (BKS), land occupation took place in the northern part of Bangladesh.
The landless men and women took position in the railway land abandoned by British regime in 1947 in Bhurungamari Upzilla (Sub-district) in Kurigram. Since 1947 illegal landowners has been enjoying this land. BKF and BKS started its orderly struggle there for last two years. They made a lot of processions, rallies, encirclements and memorandum submissions to the sub-district Executive Officer and Deputy Commissioner for the distribution of this abandoned land among the genuine landless people. Unfortunately the local administration did not put emphasize on this matter but to make mere commitments.
Because of their negligence the illegal land grabbers yesterday started to make pond/well in the arable land so that the possible occupation of the land could not take place. By understanding their evil design 22 November 2004 in the morning thousands of landless people spontaneously possessed the land removing the illegal occupants. They built their houses and it continues.
Right to food and right to shelter are the fundamental human rights. It completely agrees with the section-15(a) of the constitution of Bangladesh. This land will ensure these basic needs. So, it is necessary to support the landless people occupying the abandoned land in order that they can sustain in the land.
On 23 November 2004 at 11 a.m. thousands of landless people who took over the land gathered and staged token sit-in-strike in front of Upzilla Executive Officer's office in Bhurungamari demanding security for, and immediate initiative to give permanent settlement to the landless men and women. The Sub-district Executive Officer came to the spot and give commitment to distribute the land among the genuine landless men and women and social security for them.
