Landless action in Bangladesh

Thousands of peasant successfully organised encirclements and sit-in strikes program in front of DC (Deputy Commissioner) office in Kurigram district in Bangladesh. 


On 15 November 2005 there was a big action program organized by Bangladesh Krishok Federation (BKF) & Bangladesh Kishani Sabha (BKS) in Kurigram district, in the northern part of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Krishok Federation & Bangladesh Kishani Sabha is the biggest peasant and rural based organisation in Bangladesh.

They have land movement covering the occupation of the government fallow land and the distribution of land among the landless people according to the land law of Bangladesh. In Kurigram district they built-up organisation and occupied railway abandoned land on 22 November 2004 in Bhurungamari Upazila (sub-district) in this district. After occupation the Deputy Commissioner ( DC) took the side of landless people and supported the big landowners in order for expropriation of the landless people. For this reason BKF & BKS jointly organised a big rally, encircled the DC office and staged sit-in-strike.

When they entered in DC office area with a militant big rally, DC left the office on the back door. The demonstrators encircled and staged sit-in-strike and disclosed by speech all malpractice of DC against landless people. They demanded the removal of DC. They announced an ultimatum for three months, and if within three months the DC doesn't step down they will compel him to resign from his office through stern movement against him.

There was 7 point charter of demands raised from this program:

(1) Removal of the DC (Deputy Commissioner) of Kurigram,
(2) Withdrawal of all false Cases filed against the landless people.
(3) Initiative to take proper action on Joteder (big landowners) and terrorists against whom the criminal cases filed by the landless people.
(4) Fake "landless Association" should be cancelled.
(5) Permanent settlement of occupied land among the landless people who are in possession.
(6) Proper security should be given to landless people who are living in the occupied fallow land.
(7) Adequate food supply to famine affected people in Kurigram.
