Chernobyl disaster 20 years onby - 26.04.2006 17:50 On April 26, 1986, Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power complex in the Ukraine exploded during a routine safety test. A plume of radioactivity was sent a mile high to drift over 40% of Europe and as far away as Japan. Between 50 and 250 million curies of radiation, approximately equal to 100 medium-sized atomic bombs, was unleashed.
The 20th anniversary of the devastating accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant means no end to the suffering: Many people have died and are ill because of exposure to radiation. In times of climate change, the nuclear industry is trying to make a come-back. But nuclear radiation and wastes are no alternative to oil and coal, and cannot solve the climate change problem.
