Guinea Conakry: Strikes and Unrestby - 13.02.2007 16:39 A general strike in January 2007 lasted for 18 days. At least 59 people were killed. The protesters called President Lansana Conte to resign. Conte has been in power since a coup in 1984. He agreed to appoint a consensus prime minister and lower fuel and rice prices in negotiations with the trade unions to end the strike. Another strike started when Conte did not keep his promise, again many people were killed or injured by gunfire, and Conte declared martial law.
10 million people live in Guinea in impoverished conditions. Many live without the most basic public services, even though the country is rich in natural resources and has half the world's reserves of bauxite, a material used to produce aluminium.
