Info on the results of the last International Council Meeting

January 26th, 2008: GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION

In 2008 an event WSF will not be held. All the organizations members of
the International Council have launched a Global Day of Action on
January 26th, 2008.

The Global Day of Action has been promoted by a short common call. You
can find it at the end of this report. You can sign the call on the
website: www.wsf2008.net

On this day, everybody who is part of the global alliance for another
world is asked to organize an action to give visibility to their
struggles, campaigns, alternatives using the form and the way they
prefer.

The proposal aims to strengthen the many thematical, political and
cultural pluralities which form nowadays the “movement of movements”,
avoiding the risk of fragmentation and dispersion, increasing the
solidarity between differences.

It will be possible to have thousands and thousands of actions all over
the world: demonstrations, concerts, events, big and small actions, at
the local and national level.

There will be a global communication for all the actions, using specific
tools (a sort of Google Map showing all the actions, a virtual clock to
show the actions by hours...)

In this first stage, everybody is invited to sign the call and to start
planning their own activities.

2009 WORLD SOCIAL FORUM

On 2009 the World Social Forum will be held in Amazonia, brasilian area.
It will be organized by the newtork gathering all the movements of all
the countries of the Amazonic area.

It will be an occasion to focus on environment, climate emergency,
bio-diversity, cultural diversità, model of development, energy and
economy, community and democracy.

AND NEXT....

In 2011, Africa will be ready to host a new WSF, after a process aimed
to enlarge and reinforce the African social movements networking, to be
supported from now.

In the same time, a special attention will be devoted to Asia, crucial
area now and in the future, in order to create the possibility for
countries and movements to join the process.

IN THE MEANWHILE...

The International Council will discuss about itself, its role, its
functioning, its renawal, as asked by many organizations.

The International Secretarial, until now in reality managed only by the
Brasilians, will change.

It will discuss which date has to be used for global events and Forum:
if it has to remain the date of Davos summit or another one, better for
mobilizing in Noth and South.

It will discuss if the choose to have a Forum every two years, using the
other year for global actions and to consolidate regional and local
process, will be confirmed.

It have to discuss by sure its composition, because a so important body
is not yet open to to many experiences, Forum and movements active in
the WFS framework.

2008: A CHALLENGE ON THE FUTURE

By sure, the choice to organize the Global Day of Action provides a
better framework to the discussion on International Council and on the
WSF future.

About 2008, a large convergence of all the most important social
movements has been built, including the ones who were on the point to
leave the WSF process, there is good energy and will of mobilizing,
overcoming the risk to see WSF as a “traditional” event, not able to
have a social and political impact at the global level.

The Global Day of Action is a big challenge, from which depends the
future of the process. The success of the Global Day of Action depends
from each organization, movement, trade union, network, association
which will decide to come on board and to build it up.


THE CALL

Call for day of action and mobilisation, January 26th 2008

We are millions of women and men, organisations, networks, movements,
trade unions from all parts of the world; we come from villages,
regions, rural zones, urban centres; we are of all ages, peoples,
cultures, beliefs, but we are united by the strong conviction that

ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE

With all the richness of our plurality and diversity and our
alternatives and proposals, we struggle against neo-liberalism, war,
colonialism, racism and patriarchy which produce violence,
exploitation, exclusion, poverty, hunger and ecological disaster and
deprive people of human rights.

For many years we have been resisting and constructing innovative
processes, new cultures of organization and action from the local to the
global, in particular within the processes and Charter of Principle of
the World Social Forum from which this call emerges.

Aware of the need to set our own agenda and to increase the impact of
these thousands of expressions and manifestations, we are committed to
strengthening the solidarity and convergence amongst our struggles,
campaigns, and constructions of alternatives and alliances.

We commit ourselves to a week of action which will culminate in a Global
Day of Mobilisation and Action on January 26

With our diversity which is our strength, we invite all men and women to
undertake throughout this week creative actions, activities, events and
convergences focusing on the issues and expressed in the ways they
choose.

ACT TOGETHER FOR ANOTHER WORLD
