Ireland says No to Lisbon

by - - 20.06.2008 11:09

The EU Lisbon treaty is dead; the ratification process should stop; there can be no re-run of the referendum here; we need a new treaty; any new treaty must be ratified by all member states; and we are encouraging all groups and individuals to participate in the debate about the contents of that treaty.

Worth noting that the history of Irish resistance to colonial control by foreign governments is part of the reason the Irish constitution requires an all-citizens referendum on treaties negotiated with foreign powers. The original treaty ending the anglo-irish war was quite unpopular (granting only partial independence) and shortly afterward a civil war ensued within Ireland. Today significant treaties must go to referendum. That an anti-colonial habit in Irish political practice should stump the imposition of the European constitution shows the type of internal colonialism that a United States of Europe represents. The last time Europe was united was when the Roman Empire put everyone to the sword that disagreed with them. The armies of the ceasars didn't however get as far into the Atlantic ocean as Ireland.
