Articles on Commons - The Commoner

source: The Commoner, 06.07.2004 15:28

In the beginning there is the doing, the social flow of human interaction and creativity, and the doing is imprisoned by the deed, and the deed wants to dominate the doing and life, and the doing is turned into work, and people into things. Thus the world is crazy, and revolts are also practices of hope.

Reinventing another anti-capitalism in Mexico

Patrick Cuninghame: Reinventing an/other anti-capitalism in Mexico.
The Sixth Declaration of the EZLN and the "Other Campaign"

Well, then, in Mexico what we want to create is an agreement with people and organizations that are decidedly of the left, because we believe that it is on the political left where the idea of resisting against neoliberal globalisation really lives, and the struggle to make justice, democracy, and freedom in any country wherever it would be, where there is only freedom for big business and there is only democracy to put up election campaign signs. And because we believe that only the left can come up with a plan for struggle so that our country, Mexico, does not die. And, then, what we believe is that, with these people and organizations of the left, we will chart a course to go to every corner of Mexico where there
are humble and simple people like ourselves.

The struggles of dignity tear open the fabric of capitalist domination.

Activists Disrupted Talk by WTO Director

Boston Indymedia, 06.11.2006 18:45

On Wednesday, November 1, the JFK Forum at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government hosted Pascal Lamy, Director General of the World Trade Organization. The subject of the lecture was posed as a question: "Is the WTO Accountable?"

Shortly after the address began, three Boston activists took turns standing up and loudly disrupting the event. Each wore a bright red headband inscribed with the words, “NO WTO.” They read, in part, statements charging the WTO with putting profits before people and destroying the lives, ecosystems, and communities of people around the world. All three were quickly and forcibly dragged from the building, while still delivering their indictments, by Harvard security and Cambridge police.

The Political Economy of Peer Production

Michel Bauwens, 20.08.2006 12:55

Not since the times that Marx identified the manufacturing plants of Manchester as the blueprint for the new capitalist society, has there been a deeper transformation taking place of the fundamentals of our social life. As the political, economic and social systems are transforming themselves into distributed networks, a new human dynamic is emerging: peer to peer. As P2P is giving rise to the emergence of a third mode of production (peer production), a third mode of governance (peer governance), and a third mode of property (peer property), it is poised to overhaul our political economy in unprecedented ways. This essay aims to develop the beginning of a conceptual framework, a 'P2P theory', adequate to the understanding of these new social processes. Such P2P Theory describes the contradictory relationships between the emerging Commons and the institutions and practices of capitalism, and places the new social dynamic in an intersubjective framework.

Some Common Goods: An Afro-Colombian View

Mercedes Moya, source: The Commoner, 06.07.2004 15:47

All across the Americas, Afro-descendants have always fiercely defended themselves, culturally and politically. In all the difficult to control tropical zones of Brasil, Colombia, Venezuela, Hispaniola, Cuba, etc., thousands of runaway slaves re-founded communities and commons. Some of these communities, like the "quilombos" of Brazil and the "palenques" ("palissades" as their fortified villages were called) of Colombia, successfully resisted colonial armies for decades. The Palenque de San Basilio in Colombia was actually the first territory of the Americas to obtain a (short-lived) recognition of its independence from the spanish crown in the 18th century. Its inhabitants still speak a Bantu language.
