Guinea Conakry: Strikes and Unrest

source: various, 13.02.2007 16:39

A general strike in January 2007 lasted for 18 days. At least 59 people were killed. The protesters called President Lansana Conte to resign. Conte has been in power since a coup in 1984. He agreed to appoint a consensus prime minister and lower fuel and rice prices in negotiations with the trade unions to end the strike. Another strike started when Conte did not keep his promise, again many people were killed or injured by gunfire, and Conte declared martial law.

The Political Economy of Peer Production

Michel Bauwens, 20.08.2006 12:55

Not since the times that Marx identified the manufacturing plants of Manchester as the blueprint for the new capitalist society, has there been a deeper transformation taking place of the fundamentals of our social life. As the political, economic and social systems are transforming themselves into distributed networks, a new human dynamic is emerging: peer to peer. As P2P is giving rise to the emergence of a third mode of production (peer production), a third mode of governance (peer governance), and a third mode of property (peer property), it is poised to overhaul our political economy in unprecedented ways. This essay aims to develop the beginning of a conceptual framework, a 'P2P theory', adequate to the understanding of these new social processes. Such P2P Theory describes the contradictory relationships between the emerging Commons and the institutions and practices of capitalism, and places the new social dynamic in an intersubjective framework.

Handbook for bloggers and cyber-dissidents

source: reporters without borders, 12.05.2006 17:59

Blogs get people excited. Or else they disturb and worry them. Some people distrust them. Others see them as the vanguard of a new information revolution. Because they allow and encourage ordinary people to speak up, they’re tremendous tools of freedom of expression.
Bloggers are often the only real journalists in countries where the mainstream media is censored or under pressure. Only they provide independent news, at the risk of displeasing the government and sometimes courting arrest.

Adrift through the circuits of feminized precarious work

Streifzuege durch die Kreislaeufe feminisierter prekaerer Arbeit

 http://www.sindominio.net/karakola/precarias.htm

Storm over Prague: Millennial Cracks

source: redress uk - author: Roger Burbach, 05.05.2004 23:34

The demonstrations in Prague against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund were another landmark in the gathering popular storm against the policies and practices of the institutions that dominate the globalization process. As in previous protests, pitched confrontations took place between demonstrators and the police. Many IMF and World Bank delegates found it difficult or impossible to get to the official meetings, and the conference was adjourned early. The storefronts of a few corporate icons, like Kentucky Fried Chicken and Mercedes Benz, were smashed. But most demonstrators opposed the destruction of property as well as physical violence, declaring that their objective was the use of civil disobedience to stop "business as usual" by the World Bank and the IMF.
