On April 17th, global action day of struggles for the rights of farmers and landless, many actions are being planned in several countries. The international farmers organization Via Campesina annually commemorates the 19 MST members who were assassinated on April 17th 1996 in Brazil by paramilitary police, 69 were severely wounded.

At a meeting of PGA and indymedia activists in Mumbai, January 2004, there was a suggestion to start an exchange of analyses of the situations in various different countries, especially in Asia, Latin America and Africa. The focus would be on grassroots movements and agriculture, in preparation for the Global Action Day on April 17th, farmers' day.

La novità nel mondo agricolo in Italia identificabile nel passaggio da un sindacalismo classico, che contrattava le condizioni di lavoro ma restava indifferente a cosa e come si produceva, al movimento per un’altra agricoltura, che pone al centro l’interrogarsi sulle finalità e il senso del lavoro contadino, la riflessione a tutto campo sul mestiere di agricoltore, può apparire un fatto tardivo se paragonato ad altre esperienze in paesi a capitalismo avanzato.

Once upon a time India was said to be a golden bird. Even today Indian economy is mostly based on agriculture. A phrase was very much known here `uttam kheti, madhyam vyapar, kanishtha nokari’ means `best is farming, medium is business, base/ lowest is service’. But today it is believed `best is to serve, medium is business, worst is farming’. Everybody needs food to live-and the food producer is in pain. He is committing suicides.

Das weltweit tätige Netzwerk von Bauern und Bäuerinnen "Via Campesina" hat zum 17. April zum weltweiten Aktionstag für die Rechte der Bauern und Bäuerinnen aufgerufen. Im Rahmen dieses Aktionstages ruft das Netzwerk "geNOfood" bundesweit zu Aktionen vor und in Supermärkten auf. Ziel ist es, den Druck auf Lebensmittelhandel und Lebensmittelindustrie zu verstärken, um zu erreichen, dass die Supermarktregale und damit die Felder gentechnikfrei bleiben bzw. werden.
Außerdem sollen die Zusammenhänge zwischen Gentechnik und Umweltzerstörung, Globalisierung und Welthandel, Profitinteressen und Ausbeutung deutlich gemacht werden.

The world was shocked when the Korean farmer, Kyung-Hae Lee, deliberately sacrificed his life during a demonstration against the WTO in Cancun, Mexico, in September 2003. Lee had struggled all his life for the survival of small farming and against WTO. This is the text that he distributed in Geneva, during a month-long hunger strike in front of WTO, in March 2003.
