We will exchange ideas, information and questions around all issues concerning water. We will participate, debate, analyze and create proposals together. We want people to come together, to flow, move, celebrate and live together, being like water.

Giant water projects, in most cases, benefit the powerful, dispossess the weak. Even when such projects are publicly funded, their beneficiaries are mainly construction companies, industries, and commercial farmers. While privatization is generally couched in rhetoric about the disappearing role of the state, what we actually see is increased state intervention in water policy, subverting community control over water resources. Policies imposed by the World Bank, and trade liberalization rules crafted by the World Trade Organization (WTO), are creating a sweeping culture of corporate-states all over the world.

Senegal was one of the first African countries to engage in
privatisation of key sectors of its economy. Although Ghana now
provides a "model" for international financial institutions, in
particular the World Bank, Senegal soon found a place among those
"pupils" instanced as examples of privatisation, writes Hawa Ba. The
economic process set in motion at the end of the 70s had as its
natural corollary the retreat of the State from the guardianship of
key economic sectors and the selling off of national corporations.
