A Comprehensive Guide to the WTO

On Wednesday, November 1, the JFK Forum at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government hosted Pascal Lamy, Director General of the World Trade Organization. The subject of the lecture was posed as a question: "Is the WTO Accountable?"
Shortly after the address began, three Boston activists took turns standing up and loudly disrupting the event. Each wore a bright red headband inscribed with the words, “NO WTO.” They read, in part, statements charging the WTO with putting profits before people and destroying the lives, ecosystems, and communities of people around the world. All three were quickly and forcibly dragged from the building, while still delivering their indictments, by Harvard security and Cambridge police.

Giant water projects, in most cases, benefit the powerful, dispossess the weak. Even when such projects are publicly funded, their beneficiaries are mainly construction companies, industries, and commercial farmers. While privatization is generally couched in rhetoric about the disappearing role of the state, what we actually see is increased state intervention in water policy, subverting community control over water resources. Policies imposed by the World Bank, and trade liberalization rules crafted by the World Trade Organization (WTO), are creating a sweeping culture of corporate-states all over the world.

WTO - An Instrument of Neocolonisation and Corporate Takeover

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has provided a powerful forum for developed countries to erode the economic sovereignty of the Third World Countries including ours. Our market has been forced to open for goods and services of the multinationals particularly holders of the monopoly rights in intellectual property.

We say that we are winning. Well, without much fanfare, the Doha round of WTO negotiations officially failed this week. This is the round that has been negotiated since 2001, and the groundwork for the round was laid even before that. After so many years with so many people putting their bodies on the line and enduring so much police violence to stop these talks, it finally happened. Wow.

We are very much concerned with the recent developments in the WTO negotiations on agriculture. In the current negotiations to conclude the
modalities on agriculture before the General Council at the end of July, it is becoming clearer that once again the interests of Indian farmers and other developing countries and their farmers are in danger.

The WTO Summit in Hong Kong (
http://www.citizen.org/trade/wto/Qatar/hongkong/ ) remains in a deadlock - why? Because the decade-plus test run of the WTO's corporate globalization regime has actually increased poverty, both internationally and in the United States. Given all of the WTO's other failings, it's a powerful indictment that it has not only failed to deliver on its economic promises, but has actually made matters worse!

On Tuesday, the opening day of the Sixth Ministerial WTO conference, delegates braced for a new round of disagreements, while the protests outside welcomed the arrival of the Korean delegation which included 1,500 farmers. Internationally, farmers and fisherfolk are among those most severely affected by the WTO's neoliberal agenda.

WTO MINISTERIAL BEGINS AMID PROTESTS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE HK
CONVENTION CENTRE.
The WTO's Hong Ministerial began with several noisy protests inside and outside the Convention Centre signaling that negotiators would have an arduous 6 days ahead of them. As the inaugural ceremony began, thousands of protestors from across the world, including a 2000 strong delegation
of Korean farmers marched through the streets of Hong Kong demanding an end to the talks. Read more/see pictures:

From December 13 to 18, 2005, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is meeting in Hong Kong, China. Most NGOs agree: No deal is better than a bad deal and social movements are uniting for protest against the WTO in Hong Kong and many cities around the world.

The WTO Ministerial at Hong Kong has already failed. For the corporate world it has failed because smaller, poorer developing countries are starting to have a say in outcomes of WTO negotiations. With the backing of peoples power on the streets they walked out of the Seattle and Cancun ministerial, exercising the highest power in democracy, the power to say 'no', the power exercised by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, the power of non-cooperation with unjust rule.

"RECALIBRATING" THE EXPECTATIONS FOR HONG KONG AND RESCHEDULING WTO NEGOTIATIONS
At the mini-Ministerial Green Room meeting at the WTO on 8 November 2005, there was a general view that the expectations for the Hongkong Ministerial would have to be scaled down -- or "recalibrated", the word that was most used.
This is because of the continued wide divergence of views on most or all of the key issues.
